Drowning Mortality Survey in Sundarbans area – West Bengal

In the last few years we have gathered sufficient knowledge to conduct socio-economic and health related survey. Furnished the details:-

Drowning is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and disability across the world. An estimated 372,000 drowning deaths occur worldwide annually, although this is very likely to be under-estimated. This Project was initiated to measure the rate of drowning in children aged1-4 and 5-9 years old, as these age groups are hypothesized to be most at risk in Sundarbans

The studies was aiming at understanding socio economic conditions of Sundarbans areas, the role of different stake holders, what leads to drowning incident and assess the protection mechanism thought of.

Previously there was no data available on the rate of drowning of children in the Sundarbans region. The survey has focused on the 19 blocks of two districts called North 24 Pgs. and South 24 Pgs. based on a 10% missing data rate, the total sample size is 76,062 for 5-9 year old and 14,322 for 1-4 year old. However, as these households are not being directly visited, the surveyors need to cover a population of 809,172 within these villages. 210 villages have been randomly selected from census data to cover this population. This Survey has calculated the rate and identifies common risk factors for drowning.

Afflatus foundation under the leadership of CINI and The George Institute for Global Health, Australia architected the research design. The mix of quantitative and qualitative research played a pivotal role to understand all the factors stated above. The study was carried out in 19 blocks where the in-depth understanding of the thought process of community members, community leaders, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, Self-help group members were captured in details.

A total of 120 households were quantitatively surveyed by reaching one and half lakh population. 29 Focused group discussion and In-depth interviews were carried out along with 6 in-depth observations to decide the way forward to protect children from drowning.

Online Survey on Maternal and Child Health in Covid-19 in West Bengal

In association with WRA & CINI along with other NGOs, Afflatus Foundation has participated to collect information about maternal and child health through online CTO application survey. The objectives of the survey were mainly to analyze the situation of maternal and child health, understand mental health of mothers and identify whether mothers are adopting precautionary measures during COVID 19 pandemic in rural and urban areas across West Bengal. Total 625 respondents were surveyed during 5th June and 5th July, 2020. Seven documentaries were produced in various local languages regarding the measures to be adopted during pregnancy and post pregnancy.
